Frequently
Asked Questions
What is the difference between local SEO and regular SEO?
Local SEO is about appearing when someone searches with local intent, whether they type a place name or not, and that brings the map pack into play alongside the normal results. Your Google Business Profile, your proximity to the searcher and your local citations all matter in a way they simply do not for national terms.
How important is my Google Business Profile?
For the map pack it is the single most important asset you have, more so than your website. Categories, services, opening hours, photos, posts and reviews all feed into whether you appear and how you compare. A neglected profile is the most common reason a business with a decent website still does not show up locally.
Do I need a physical address to rank locally?
You need a genuine address, but it does not have to be a shopfront. Service area businesses can hide their address and still rank, provided the business is real and verifiable. What does not work is inventing locations or renting a mailbox to appear somewhere you do not operate, which tends to get caught and suspended.
Why am I not showing in the map pack?
Usually one of four things: your profile is incomplete or in the wrong category, you are further from the searcher than your competitors, you have fewer or weaker reviews, or your business details are inconsistent across the web. It is worth checking all four before concluding the problem is your website.
Do reviews affect local rankings?
They influence both rankings and whether anyone clicks you once you appear, which is the part people underrate. A steady flow of recent reviews matters more than a large number collected years ago, and responding to them signals an active business. Review volume alone will not fix a profile that is wrong in other ways.
