Frequently
Asked Questions
What is the difference between link building and digital PR?
Link building is the broader activity of earning links to your site. Digital PR is one way of doing it, by creating something genuinely newsworthy and getting journalists to cover it. Digital PR tends to produce fewer but much stronger links from places you could never buy your way into, while other link building covers the more routine work.
Do backlinks still matter?
Yes. They matter less in isolation than they did a decade ago, and quality now counts for far more than volume, but links remain one of the clearest signals of whether other people consider a site worth referencing. In competitive markets they are usually the difference between pages that could rank and pages that do.
Should I buy links?
No, and I will not do it for clients. Beyond the guideline problem, bought links tend to come from sites that exist to sell links, which means they carry little weight and sit in obvious footprints. The money is better spent on something worth linking to. That is slower, which is the honest downside.
How many links do I need?
There is no number, only a comparison. What matters is how your link profile looks against the sites currently ranking for the terms you want, which is something an SEO audit can establish properly. For some local terms a handful of solid local links is enough; for competitive national terms it is a different order of magnitude.
How long before links have an effect?
Usually weeks rather than days for the link to be found and counted, and longer before you can separate its effect from everything else happening. Link building is the slowest-moving part of SEO, which is why it works best running quietly alongside the faster on-page and technical work.
